Flavour, use & storage

Flavour profile

Sharp, peppery and slightly bitter, with a toasted onion-and-oregano character. Far more savoury than the name suggests, and nothing like cumin despite the nickname. Lightly toasting the seed softens the bitterness and brings out a nutty note.

How to use

Take a quarter to half a teaspoon of whole seed, either straight with water or crushed and stirred into honey. In cooking, scatter it over flatbread before baking, or over salads, eggs, roasted vegetables and yoghurt. A brief toast in a dry pan deepens the flavour considerably.

How to store

Airtight, cool and dry, out of the sun. Whole seed holds its oils much longer than ground, so grind only what you will use.

Before you take this

Black seed may lower blood sugar and blood pressure, and may increase the effect of blood-thinning medication. Speak to your doctor if you take medication for diabetes, blood pressure or clotting, or before surgery. Avoid medicinal amounts during pregnancy.

Questions about Black Seed

Is black seed the same as black cumin?

The names are used interchangeably but it is not cumin. Black seed is Nigella sativa, also called kalonji. It tastes peppery and oniony, nothing like cumin.

Whole or crushed?

Both work. Whole seed keeps its oils longer; crushing just before use releases more aroma. Traditionally it is crushed and stirred into honey.

Can I cook with it?

Yes, widely. Scatter it over flatbread before baking, or over salads, eggs and roasted vegetables. A brief toast in a dry pan deepens the flavour considerably.

What sizes does it come in?

4 oz, 8 oz and 16 oz. The herb is identical in every size — only the quantity in the pouch changes.

How is it packed?

By hand, in small batches, at our facility in Edison, New Jersey. One ingredient and nothing else — no fillers, flow agents or anti‑caking additives. The full ingredient list is printed on the pouch.

How should I store it?

Airtight, cool and dry, out of the sun. Whole seed holds its oils much longer than ground, so grind only what you will use.

How long does delivery take?

Orders are processed within 1–2 business days. Standard shipping then takes 3–5 business days and is free on every order, with no minimum. Express is available at checkout. We ship across the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. See our shipping policy for full details.
