Flavour, use & storage
Flavour profile
Sweet and unmistakably liquorice-like, warm and rounded with a clean, slightly cooling finish. Softer and sweeter than fennel, and without the sharp edge of star anise.
How to use
Crush a quarter teaspoon lightly with the back of a spoon to release the oils, then steep in freshly boiled water for five to ten minutes and strain. Also used whole in breads, biscuits, poached fruit and spice blends, and alongside fennel and cardamom in after-dinner teas.
How to store
Airtight, cool and dry, out of sunlight. Whole seed holds its aroma far longer than ground, so crush only what you need.
Before you take this
Anise may not be suitable in medicinal amounts during pregnancy. People allergic to plants in the carrot family such as fennel, celery, caraway or dill may react to it. Culinary amounts are generally well tolerated.
This information is general and is not medical advice. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or managing a health condition.
Questions about Anise Seed
Is this the same as star anise?
No. They taste similar because both contain anethole, but they are unrelated plants. Anise seed is softer and sweeter; star anise is sharper and far more intense.
Should I crush it before brewing?
Yes. Crushing lightly with the back of a spoon releases the oils and makes a noticeably stronger tea. Whole uncrushed seed brews very weakly.
Does it contain caffeine?
No. Anise seed is naturally caffeine free, which is why it is so often drunk in the evening or after a meal.
What sizes does it come in?
4 oz, 8 oz and 16 oz. The herb is identical in every size — only the quantity in the pouch changes.
How is it packed?
By hand, in small batches, at our facility in Edison, New Jersey. One ingredient and nothing else — no fillers, flow agents or anti‑caking additives. The full ingredient list is printed on the pouch.
How should I store it?
Airtight, cool and dry, out of sunlight. Whole seed holds its aroma far longer than ground, so crush only what you need.
How long does delivery take?
Orders are processed within 1–2 business days. Standard shipping then takes 3–5 business days and is free on every order, with no minimum. Express is available at checkout. We ship across the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. See our shipping policy for full details.
