Protein Shakes and Honey: Sweetening Without Wrecking the Macros
Protein intake is the one piece of nutrition advice almost everyone now agrees on. The problem is that a lot of protein powder is genuinely unpleasant, and an unpleasant shake is one you eventually stop making.
Honey fixes the flavour. Here is how to use it without quietly turning a protein shake into a dessert.
The numbers, plainly
One teaspoon of honey is roughly 21 calories and about 6g of sugar. Two teaspoons, around 42 calories and 12g.
For context, a typical whey shake is 120 to 150 calories. Adding a teaspoon raises that by under 20% and makes the difference between a drink you finish and one you tip away. Adding four teaspoons is a different conversation.
One teaspoon is usually enough. Most people reach for more because they add it to cold liquid where it does not disperse, so it ends up as a lump at the bottom and the drink still tastes bland.
The technique that actually matters
Honey does not dissolve well in cold liquid. Do this instead:
- Put the honey in the empty shaker or blender first.
- Add two tablespoons of warm water and swirl until it is a thin syrup.
- Then add your powder and cold liquid.
You will use noticeably less honey for the same sweetness. In a blender with frozen fruit this matters less, but in a shaker bottle it is the difference between working and not.
Which honey for which flavour
- Vanilla or unflavoured whey: a mild raw honey, or Ashwagandha Honey if you want it in your morning shake.
- Chocolate: a darker, stronger honey holds up. Black Seed Honey is assertive and works better here than you would expect.
- Coffee or mocha shakes: Shilajit Honey - the earthy note sits well with coffee.
- Fruit or greens blends: Sidr or a light wildflower honey, so you do not fight the fruit.
Three shakes worth making
Morning coffee protein shake
1 scoop vanilla or chocolate protein, 200ml cold brew, 100ml milk of choice, 1 tsp Shilajit Honey loosened in warm water, ice. Blend.
Post-training recovery
1 scoop protein, 1 banana, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 250ml milk, 1 tsp honey, ice. The carbohydrate here is doing a job, not just adding sweetness.
Greens shake you will actually drink
1 scoop unflavoured or vanilla protein, large handful spinach, half a frozen banana, 1 tsp honey, 250ml water, squeeze of lemon. The honey and lemon together do most of the work of hiding the greens.
When to skip it
If you are in a deliberate calorie deficit and tracking closely, or managing blood sugar, use a non-caloric sweetener instead and keep honey for elsewhere. There is no version of honey that is not sugar.
And if you are drinking a shake right before bed purely for protein, you probably do not need it sweet at all.
